Whether legal or illegal, gambling is a very popular and a thriving industry in the world today. Though card and dice games were the most preferred games in the ancient times, Horse racing is the most wide spread form of gambling these days in many countries. Sports’ betting is another common industry. Legally, gambling is run by government and companies. Illegal forms of gambling are where bookmakers (bookies) are involved. Some informal kind of gambling takes place where two friends bet on something. Gambling rules are different for different countries and it even varies for different states. Casinos can be called the biggest establishments where betting takes place legally. Here, gamblers get a chance to bet against the establishment which is also called the ‘house’ (casino), in games like roulette wheels, slot machines, keno, dice games. There are games like poker where gamblers play against each other and not with the ‘house’. The games in Casino are card games like poker, blackjack which are played on tables and there have machine games like slot machines. Roulette wheel is a mechanical machine but it is played on table. Legal sports’ betting is done in casinos but illegal sports’ betting business is flourishing worldwide. Horse racing is an example of legal sports betting. Animal fighting like bullfighting, dog fighting and cock fighting is also practiced in some countries but it is not legal everywhere due to laws on animal cruelty. Online gambling sites are another source of modern gamblers. Lotteries, common card games, dice games are all non- casino forms of gambling.

Gambling has been a part of many great civilizations since ancient times. In most cultures it was an accepted social activity. Civilizations like Roman, Greek and Indian, had some or the other form of gambling. Ivory dices dating back to 1500 B.C. have been discovered in Egypt. It was the oldest form of games played by people. Dice games are mentioned in Indian Vedas and the epic of Mahabharata. Dice were made of bones of animals in the ancient times. Later dices were made sea shells and pebbles. Dices are not only cubical in shape as we now know them with, but dices have been 4 sided, 8 sided, 12 sided and many other different shapes like barrel shaped. The cubical shaped dice was a Korean invention. Pyramid of Giza has some ancient inscriptions on a tablet which talk about gambling. Playing cards must have originated in China since they were the inventors of paper and paper money. In fact, shuffling was practiced in China in 900 A.D. but they used paper money then and not cards. From there it spread to Muslim empire which started using cards which had intricate designs on their back. From the Mediterranean, it was brought to Europe and the French added the Queen to the court cards. The modern deck of 52 cards is also a contribution of France. First lottery finds its mention in the 16th century. Roulette wheels was again invented in France and later taken to USA from there. The American roulette wheel is still different from the French one.

Gambling can be a part of out daily life whether or not we may be realizing it. With any activity which has risk involved to a certain extent, we are gambling. So by that definition, we all gamble daily. A high risk taking person or say an entrepreneur may decide to give up his steady, but low paying job, to start some venture of his own. It would be called a big gamble as the risk involved is huge and the person does not know at that point whether he will succeed or not in his new venture. From simple decisions to many big decisions in life which can change the life’s path we take big risks while making that decision. So sometimes it is rightly said that everything in life is a big gamble.

When anyone wagers or bet money or anything material, on an event; the result of which is unknown at the time of betting, it is called gambling. It is an effort to win something in an occurrence; the outcome of which is not certain at that time. It depends on luck and chance. Even with small betting amounts, it would be considered gambling. To qualify as an act of gambling, there needs to be two parties involved; one would be a loser and the other one, a winner. Secondly, there has to be an exchange of anything valuable, either money or anything else which the winner will take at the expense of loser. The third thing is while betting both the parties should not be aware of the outcome of the event. Buying lottery tickets is also gambling. Sports’ betting is another type of gambling which is very popular in many countries and varies depending on which sport is popular in the region. Like cricket is a rage in Asia, football and soccer, in Europe. Horse racing and motor car racing are other betting avenues for bettors. Casino is a place where gambling takes place under one roof and it is legal there. It offers many options for people who love gambling like slot machines, bingo, roulette wheels, various card games like poker, blackjack and dice games. Gambling is very dependent on luck and chance but a skill of the gambler makes difference in few card games like Poker.
